When season 7 of The Voice wrapped, I found myself in the middle of a new life. Honestly, at times I felt really out of place. From a young age I had my life planned out and I was very content with my plan. However, my time on The Voice threw my plan out the window at lighting speed.
I was in the tenth grade when I went to the gym for the first time and my friend Jon (who was a regular at the gym) was with me to show me the ropes. If I remember correctly, the first workout my pale, skinny, cut-off wearing, body performed was the leg press. Why we started there?
As Jansen and I drove an ATV through a wooded area in Palmer, Alaska, she turned to me and said, "Look at where we are right now and where this music career has taken you. To think, sometimes you question whether you are doing the right thing."
The song lyrics above were inspired by Romans 7:15, "For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate." There are things I do and ways that I react to certain situations that I hate, yet I continue to fall short time and time again, always left with a feeling of guilt.
Jansen and I have been married a little over two weeks now and married life has been awesome! There is nothing better than waking up next to your best friend every single day. Sure, its only been two weeks so those of you who have been married for a while are probably rolling your eyes, but at this point in time, we are loving life. I'm not perfect and neither is she, but that is what's going to make the rest of our lives together so interesting! Lets get real, it would be extremely boring if I married someone who agreed with everything I said.
When I was away on my last trip, I decided to take a new approach to songwriting. Normally, when I try to write I sit down with the intention of not getting up until I have a song or part of a song written. However, I noticed that I kept getting stuck and couldn't get any ideas flowing. Frustration was my number one enemy. Just as an experiment, I decided to sit down and write with no expectations. My only goal was to put my pen to a piece of paper.
The top 12 rounds of The Voice hold a very special place in my heart! During this part of the show I had the opportunity to sing “Jealous” by Nick Jonas, which I think allowed me to continue in the competition and really lit a fire under me. After watching Monday’s episode, I have a feeling some of the current contestants are feeling what I felt after my top 12 performance!
Tuesday nights episode got started with Blake Shelton repping a blonde hair wig, inspired by Adam’s hairstyle. Adam had to laugh as he asked Blake what was on his head. Blake responded with a quick, “Exactly!” Nice one Blake, but let’s let Adam have the blonde hairdo. I don’t think you pull it off too well.
