Season 12 (Blind Auditions Part 5)
First and foremost, it’s been a crazy week so I apologize for getting this one out late! Honestly, I didn’t realize how much time and energy these posts would take but I’m really glad I’m doing it. I’ve gotten some great feedback so far which has definitely kept me pushing through. Please let me know what you like and don’t like about the blog by leaving me a message in the comments section. These blog posts are for YOU not me, so I’m always open to suggestions on how I can improve!
In the opening credits Blake set the tone saying, “everyone wants to win so we’re gonna pull out all the stops.” Ladies and gentleman. SHOTS WERE FIRED! There was the normal banter going on but it seemed like in this episode Blake and Gwen were competing for the same contestant multiple times. I met a woman yesterday who said she couldn’t stand watching Gwen and Blake flirt, bicker, and act all lovey-dovey with each other. What do you think about their relationship? Personally, I don’t mind it! Their relationship status adds a different element and tone to the show that hasn’t been there before.
Tuesday’s episode was jam packed with talent!
Johnny Gates (Maggie May)
Mr. Gates started the night off with his rendition of the Rod Stewart classic, "Maggie May". In his opening package we found out that not too long ago he had the opportunity to tour with Rod Stewart. Not too bad Johnny...Not too bad at all. Johnny was a late bloomer in music, joining his first band when he was a senior in high school. His voice definitely has a rock edge to it and is one of the more unique voices I’ve heard so far in the competition. The tone of his voice wasn’t too harsh and the way he ended his phrases reminded me of Steven Tyler from Aerosmith! He was extremely comfortable during his performance something that Gwen was quick to pick up on. Johnny joined Team Gwen, saying, “Us garageband kids gotta stick together”! He’s gonna be a fun one to watch this season!
Malik Davage (Sure Thing)
Like many of the other contestants, Malik has put a lot of work into pursuing his dream in order to provide a better life for his daughter. Seeing how he spoke about his daughter brought tears to my eyes. He had a great sense of rhythm during his performance which helped the song to flow really nicely. Adam was the only one to turn for Malik and the tears of joy that ran down his face as Adam began to talk made it clear how grateful he was for this opportunity. Similar to the comments I received from Adam during my audition, he mentioned that Malik definitely needs some work but there’s no telling where he can go if he buckles down and is dedicated to being the best he can be. Welcome to the Team Adam family!
Lauryn Judd (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun)
Lauryn has such a sweet and pure voice. She began the song with a soft airiness to her voice and then halfway through came in with a powerful belt! I’ve never heard someone with the ability to immediately switch from their falsetto to a powerful belt like Lauryn did. Blake, Alicia and Gwen fought at the opportunity to be a part of Lauryn’s journey on The Voice. I’m a fan of Lauryn Judd! After some deliberation Lauryn chose to join Team Alicia! GREAT decision. Alicia will know exactly how to take her to the next level! Can’t wait to see what Lauryn’s next move is.
Caroline Sky (Will You Love Me Tomorrow)
The tone of Caroline’s voice is super cool! She’s 16 years old but has a maturity to her voice that is way beyond her years. Gwen turned around first saying that she had so much control over her voice AND her nerves as well as a patience with how she sang. Blake turned around at the end of the performance with the intent to help Caroline through this competition as long as she helps him live the girl dream. Like Adam, it’s incredible weird that Blake has that dream, which probably pushed Caroline more towards Team Gwen! I definitely saw this coming.
Josh Hoyer (Oh Girl)
A working musician and bartender with two daughters, Josh stressed how difficult it was to be a touring musician with a family that he loves with all his heart. Josh has such a cool tone to his voice that reminds me of Daryl Hall from Hall & Oates. Adam said he had a “soulful wisdom” about him that he was excited to see explode. Blake figured that if he is going to be on The Voice he might as well be on the winning team! Well played Blake...Josh mentioned that he has continued to stick with his pursuit of a career in music because he believes that music is something the world needs right now! I couldn’t agree more. Josh headed over to Team Blake. Best of luck Josh, you’re going to kill it!
SO, who has the official Voice App??? I’ll be honest, I haven’t used it much but because of all these blog posts, I figured it would be cool to create my own team and I want YOU to do the same! On the app (which you can get on the app store or google play) anyone has the opportunity to form their own team consisting of 5 artists. I picked my team and have listed my five below, in no particular order. Create a team and let me know who you picked in the comments section.
I’ll have a new post coming your way tomorrow (I promise I’m going to be more diligent this week getting these out). In the meantime….
